Focused Shock Wave Therapy

What is Extracorporeal Focused Shock Wave Therapy (FSW)?

In the body, these high energy acoustic waves stimulate the cells and the body’s intrinsic healing mechanism.

In Focused Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy, the wave is focused through a lens and transmitted into the body, up to a depth of about 4.7”

You may have heard of high energy shockwave treatments that can break up kidney stones (lithotripsy). The F-SW uses a similar wave form but at much lower energy levels. F-SW isn’t designed to destroy tissue, but rather to restart the healing cascade via mechanotransduction, a process which helps improve many chronic conditions.

What Are The Physiological Effects of FSW?

The physiological effects of Extracorporeal Shock Waves (ESWs) are quite remarkable! This technology uses acoustic waves to positively influence cell functions and stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. Some of its key benefits include:

  • Enhanced Neovascularization: Promotes the formation of new blood vessels, improving circulation and oxygenation in the treated area.

  • Accelerated Growth Factor Release: Encourages tissue repair and regeneration by stimulating growth factors crucial for healing.

  • Inhibition of Inflammatory Molecules: Helps reduce inflammation, contributing to pain relief and faster recovery.

  • Stimulation of Cellular Processes: Activates mechanisms that aid in tissue regeneration and repair.

What Can Extracorporeal Focused Shock Wave Treat?

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is a versatile treatment used for a variety of conditions, particularly those involving musculoskeletal issues. Here are some of the conditions it can address:

      • Tendinopathies: Conditions like tennis elbow, Achilles tendinitis, and patellar tendinitis.
      • Plantar Fasciitis: A common cause of heel pain.
      • Bone Healing: Assists in cases of delayed or nonunion fractures.
      • Calcific Tendinitis: Helps dissolve calcium deposits in tendons.
      • Myofascial Pain Syndrome: Relieves chronic pain in muscles and connective tissues.
      • Neurological Disorders: Can reduce spasticity in certain conditions.
      • Urological Issues: Used for erectile dysfunction and chronic pelvic pain syndrome.

How Many Treatments Will You Need?

There are two things that impact how many treatments are required:  The condition being treated and how the tissue responds.
Typically, 3-6 treatments are necessary with resolution of some symptoms being achieved by the third treatment.

An improvement in function and pain relief may be seen after the first treatment.
These improvements can foster increased functional levels when incorporated into a well-designed plan of care by your rehabilitation specialist. Even though you may have pain relief, follow the recommendations of your physician on when you may return to activity.

CONTRAINDICATIONS OF FOCUSED SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

 Focused Shock Wave therapy (FSW), also known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT), is a procedure regarded as one of the most cost effective and safest of conservative management approaches to musculoskeletal disorders.

There are minimal known side effects of F-SW. It is recommended, however, that this form of treatment not be used in the following situations:

  • Over and around the uterus during pregnancy;
  • Where there is active ongoing hemorrhaging/bleeding tendencies;
  • When there is any indication or diagnosis of blood clots;
  • Over and around the thyroid gland or cancer (tumors or cancerous areas);
  • Over the cardiac region and large nerves;
  • Directly over spinal column or head, where analgesia/pain relief may mask
    progressive pathology;
  • On a patient taking medication that may thin the blood (eg Warafin);
  • Over open wounds, skin irritation or swollen areas;
  • Over the growth plates in children.
